This document is the National Historic Landmark (NHL) nomination for Tolson's Chapel and School in Sharpsburg, Frederick County, Maryland. The NHL nomination for Tolson's Chapel and School documents its national significance under NHL Criterion 1 and Criterion Exception 1 for its outstanding ability to convey the history of African American institution-building during Reconstruction. As an exceptionally well-preserved post-Civil War African American church, cemetery, and school, Tolson’s Chapel illustrates the determination of African Americans in the former slave-holding states to build independent institutions after the end of slavery. The schools that African Americans established during Reconstruction laid the foundation for public education throughout the South and the border states. The period of national significance begins in 1866, when the church was constructed and ends in 1899, when the building ceased to be used as a school.
