This document is a National Historic Landmark nomination for the Zoar Historic District in Zoar, Tuscarawas County, Ohio. The National Historic Landmark (NHL) nomination for the Zoar Historic District documents its national significance under NHL Criteria 1 and 5 as an exceptional example of an early nineteenth-century utopian society. Zoar was the only permanent home the Society of Separatists had in the United States and clearly conveys the founding, successful development, and eventual dissolution of the Society of Separatists, a nationally significant communal utopian society. The district meets NHL Exceptions 1 and 6. The period of national significance is 1818 to 1898.
