This document is the National Historic Landmark (NHL) nomination for the Painted Desert Community Complex in Petrified Forest National Park in Apache County, Arizona. The NHL nomination for the Painted Desert Community Complex documents its national significance under NHL Criteria 1 and 4. Under Criterion 1, the complex is significant as an outstanding illustration of the challenges and accomplishments of the Mission 66 program to expand and modernize the nation's park system. Designed by Richard J. Neutra and Robert E. Alexander, the complex is significant under Criterion 4 because it superbly illustrates the key design elements of what became known as the Park Service Modern style. The period of national significance is 1961 to 1965.
