The National Historic Landmark (NHL) nomination for Andalusia Farm (Flannery O'Connor Home) documents its national significance under NHL Criterion 2 as the home of author Flannery O'Connor (1925-1964), who is widely acknowledged as one of the most accomplished, innovative, and influential short-story writers in post-World War II America. O’Connor’s stories broke new ground by using violence, grotesque characters, and the formalist principles of New Criticism in service of religious themes. O’Connor also was one of several mid-twentieth-century authors whose fiction heralded a major shift in Southern literature by focusing on universal rather than regional themes. The period of national significance is 1951 to 1964.
