This document is the National Historic Landmark (NHL) nomination for the Pan American Union Headquarters in Washington, District of Columbia. The NHL nomination for the Pan American Union Headquarters documents its national significance under NHL Criteria 1 and 4. Under Criterion 1, it outstandingly represents the institutional expression of Pan Americanism, a late nineteenth-century US-led movement to organize the republics of the Western Hemisphere into an international cooperative body. The property is nationally significant under Criterion 4 as one of the most significant Beaux-Arts buildings in the country and for its association with architect Paul Philippe Cret. It also exemplifies the character of the Pan American movement within the Beaux-Arts school of design. The period of national significance is 1908-1967.
