Joseph K. Opperman (JKOA) Consultant. 2021. Historic Structures Report: Snodgrass, Kelly, and Brotherton Houses. Historic Structure Report. National Park Service. North Carolina
The Brotherton, Kelly, Snodgrass House Historic Structure Report was prepared for the U.S. Department of the Interior, National Park Service, Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park, Fort Oglethorpe, GA. The HSR documents the development, use, and current condition of the Snodgrass, Kelly, and Brotherton Houses. The buildings played a significant role in the Civil War Battle of Chickamauga and are thought to have been largely rebuilt in the immediate period after the war. The log houses are representative of the principle residences of historic farmsteads present during the 1863 Civil War Battle of Chickamauga. The report is divided into two major segments. Part I: Developmental History, is a scholarly report documenting the context and evolution of the building, presenting a detailed physical description of the exterior and interior on a room-by-room basis and assessing current conditions. It describes the significance and integrity of the house and is based on the combined analysis of documentary research and physical examination. Part II: Treatment and Use, review the requirements for treatment and use, presents the NPS administratively determined ultimate treatment and use with an evaluation of alternative treatments, addresses resilience to natural disasters, and offers recommendations to achieve the ultimate treatment and use, coupled with recommendations for further enhancement. The report consists of 112 pages along with appendices Appendix A, Documentation Drawings Showing Sample and Drilling Locations, / Appendix B, Historic Photo Comparison Elevations, / Appendix C, Structural Investigation Report by 1200AE, / Appendix D, Wood Assessment Report by Anthony & Associates and / Appendix E, List of Implementation Project
