The Cactus Rescue Crew, a group of volunteers belonging to the Tucson Cactus and Succulent Society, rescue many different types of cacti, including the saguaro, from destruction in urban development projects. With the cooperation of developers, these crews have rescued thousands of cacti which would otherwise be destroyed or not survive transplanting when areas are cleared for housing, roadways, etc. Rescued cactus are sold for xeriscaping landscaping using low-water-use plants.
