This document is updated National Historic Landmark (NHL) documentation for the Virginia State Capitol National Historic Landmark in Richmond, Virginia The updated NHL documentation for the Virginia State Capitol documents its national significance under NHL Criterion 1 and 4. The property was originally designated a National Historic Landmark in 1960 under the Civil War theme as the Confederate Capitol because from July 1861 to April 1865 the Confederate Congress met in the building. In 1969 a National Register of Historic Places nomination was prepared to add discussion of its architectural significance as a Thomas Jefferson-designed building representing the introduction of Neo-Classicism in public buildings in the United States. The Virginia State Capitol building houses the oldest legislative body in America. Architecturally, the Virginia State Capitol is the first instance since ancient Roman times where the temple form was employed for a public building of importance.
