This document is updated National Historic Landmark (NHL) documentation for Fort William H. Seward NHL in Haines, Haines Borough, Alaska. The updated NHL nomination for Fort William H. Seward (Chilkoot Barracks) documents its national significance under NHL Criterion 1 as the most intact remaining example of the twelve military forts that were constructed during the Alaska gold rush of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries and for its relationship to the Alaska boundary dispute that occurred during the same period. The updated documentation revises and clearly defines the NHL boundary, identifies contributing and noncontributing resources, provides additional historical information and context, and re-names the NHL Fort William H. Seward (Chilkoot Barracks). The period of national significance is 1902-1945.
