This document is the National Historic Landmark nomination for the Marjory Stoneman Douglas House in Miami, Miami-Dade County, Florida. The NHL nomination for the Marjory Stoneman Douglas House documents its national significance under NHL Criterion 1 for its association with the U.S. environmental movement in the twentieth century, and under NHL Criterion 2 as the residence and primary workspace of Marjory Stoneman Douglas, one of the nation’s most important environmentalists of the twentieth century. Her book "The Everglades: River of Grass" (1947) became a canonical work in twentieth-century environmental literature and marked a turning point from the pre-World War II conservation movement to postwar environmentalism. In the late 1960s, she founded the Friends of the Everglades, which played a central role in the conservation of the Everglades and in the environmental movement nationwide. The period of national significance is 1926-1998.
