This document is the National Historic Landmark nomination for Scout's Rest Ranch Headquarters in North Platte, Lincoln County, Nebraska. The NHL nomination for Scout's Rest Ranch Headquarters documents its national significance under NHL Criteria 1 and 2 for its associations with the Wild West show movement and its creator, William F. “Buffalo Bill” Cody. Not only was Cody’s Wild West show the first (1883), it also was the longest-lasting and the most famous and financially successful. It inspired more than 100 imitator shows before the Wild West movement faded in the 1930s and spawned the emergence of modern rodeo in the 1920s. The motion picture industry later incorporated many Wild West show themes into its western films. The period of national significance is 1886-1913.
