This document is the National Historic Landmark nomination for Grant Cottage in Wilton, Saratoga County, New York. The NHL nomination for Grant Cottage documents its national significance under NHL Criteria 1 and 2. Grant Cottage is the only surviving place in the United States where former President Ulysses S. Grant wrote "Personal Memoirs of Ulysses S. Grant." Following Grant’s death at the cottage on July 23, his memoirs became a landmark work of American publishing and literature. Grant Cottage meets NHL Criterion 1 for its close association with the creation of "Memoirs," as well as Criterion 2 for association with Grant's literary achievements. The period of national significance is June 16-July 23, 1885.
