This document is updated National Historic Landmark (NHL) documentation for the Old Salem Historic District National Historic Landmark in Winston-Salem, Forsyth County, North Carolina. The updated NHL nomination for the Old Salem Historic District documents its national significance under NHL Criteria 1, 4, 5, and 6. Salem is an outstanding, intact example of a theocratically governed, eighteenth-century, utopian Moravian settlement established by German immigrants. The town's Germanic architecture is an exceptional reflection of the unique culture of the Moravian community. An expanded period of significance includes the pioneering effort to restore and preserve the town and encompasses archaeological investigations that revealed details about the history of Old Salem and helped drive the field of historic archaeology. The district meets NHL Criteria Exceptions 1, 5, 6, and 8. The periods of national significance are 1766-1913 and 1948-2010.
