Administrative History of the National Park Service Inventory & Monitoring Division

Administrative History of the National Park Service Inventory & Monitoring Division. National Park Service

In July 2019, as the Natural Resource Challenge reached its 20th anniversary, the time was right for the Inventory & Monitoring Division to begin to document its history—its origins, challenges, and successes—and look to its future. Many of IMD’s early standard-bearers are now retired—some for many years—and documenting their perspectives through oral histories is vital to a thorough administrative history. Creating a record of our shared history will help program managers and other staff to understand the division and its mission from within the context of its origins, its place within the agency, and the central role IMD plays in helping the NPS fulfill its mission. The government is full of programs that are initiated and never make it to 20 years. What made this program succeed and grow when others failed? Where did it almost fail? Where did its support come from? What were its biggest threats? Answers to these questions will be key to the continued success of IMD and offer guidance on how to stand up future government initiatives.
