This document is updated National Historic Landmark (NHL) documentation for the William Howard Taft Home National Historic Landmark in Cincinnati, Hamilton County, Ohio. The updated NHL nomination for the William Howard Taft Home documents its national significance under NHL Criterion 2 for its association with William Howard Taft, 27th president of the United States (1909–1913) and 10th chief justice of the United States Supreme Court (1921–1930). Taft was born and spent his formative years in the house, where he gained an understanding of the law, diplomacy, and public service from his father, Alphonso Taft, who served as Secretary of War and Attorney General under President Ulysses S. Grant. The Taft Home is the only property with integrity to survive that is directly associated with President Taft. The period of national significance is 1876-1886. The updated documentation addresses changes made to the property since its NHL designation in 1964, incorporates recent scholarship on Taft, and changes the name of the NHL.
