Sitka National Historical Park Visitor Center is in the City and Borough of Sitka on Baranof Island in Southeastern Alaska, overlooking a natural harbor with views of the surrounding islands. Accessible only by boat or airplane, Sitka is the former capital of Russian-America and the District of Alaska (1867-1906) and is currently the fourth largest community in Alaska. The community has deep ties to the sea for transportation, communication, and livelihood. During the summer, most visitors arrive by cruise ship and spend the day touring Sitka by foot or by bus. Most of these visitors access the park via Lincoln Street, passing an assortment of tourist boutiques and historically significant buildings and sites, including the carefully restored Russian Bishop’s House, a National Historic Landmark.
