Describes research and monitoring of growth of saguaro since 1933 in the Rincon Mountain District of Saguaro National Monument. Scientists had been concerned with perceived decline of saguaro population in the monument but found that new growth has occurred. Article describes establishment of long-term monitoring plots in Saguaro National Park and elsewhere in the Sonoran Desert as well as analysis programs of saguaro tissue to study effects of pollutants, decline of necessary nurse trees and saguaro pollinating bats.
