Geographic Extent and Severity of Air Pollution Injury in Saguaro National Monument (Rincon Unit)

Duriscoe D and Selph M. 1985. Geographic Extent and Severity of Air Pollution Injury in Saguaro National Monument (Rincon Unit). Northrup Environmental Sciences

Twenty-three permanent plots of 15 trees each were established in the Rincon Mountains of Arizona and evaluated for air pollution injury. Findings show widespread ozone injury in pines, slight injury in oaks and walnuts, none on aspens and sycamores. Injury was greater at higher elevations than at lower elevations. Sources of ozone are from automobiles, increasing development in Tucson and copper mining in the area. Study provides a data base for future evaluation of air pollution injury and documents the presence and location of ozone injury symptoms on pines and hardwoods in Saguaro National Monument.
