Excerpts from an 1846 account of the American Southwest by lieutenant W. H. Emory who was reporting to the government in Washington on the character of a vast and mainly unknown tract including New Mexico, Arizona and California. Emory's botanical, cultural and geological scientific reports are not included in detail, but he does mention a 50 foot tall saguaro cactus which he called pitahaya. These were seen in abundance as Emory's party followed the Gila River. There are general descriptions of the areas in which the pitahaya were seen.
