Trip Report: 1990 Middle Noatak Moose Survey

Resource Management. 1990. To: NWA Staff. Re: Trip Report: 1990 Middle Noatak Moose Survey

On November 7th NWA Staff participated in fall moose counts conducted in the middle Noatak. A total of 487 moose were counted during a total of 12 hours survey time (1989 total = 305 for same area). Bull cow ratios were 25:100, similar to that found in 1989. Due to the season's early and heavy snows distribution of moose was quite different than that found in 1989. Almost all sightings of groups occurred along main river corridors. This was in contrast to what was seen in 1989 when moose were dispersed. Locations where moose were observed included side tributaries and on hillsides. The increase in sightability in 1990 compared to 1989 may be responsible for higher overall moose numbers.
