Papago Legend of the Saguaro
Enos SI. 1981. Papago Legend of the Saguaro. Pages 176-181. In Evers L and et al (ed). The South Corner of Time: Hopi, Navajo, Papago, Yaqui. University of Arizona Press. Tucson, AZ. Sun Track: An American Indian Literary Series
A literary story of the Papago rather than a word-for-word translation of traditional story. The story tells of a young girl on a journey to find her mother. She is aided by encounters with coyote, rabbit and bird. The girl turns into a plant; tall with red fruit, the description of which sounds much like a saguaro though named hash'an.
