Regions 3, 4, 5 Park Cultural Landscapes Program. 2023. Rock Harbor Lodge Historic District: Cultural Landscapes Inventory, Isle Royale National Park. Cultural Landscapes Inventory Report. 500467. National Park Service. NPS Midwest Regional Office / CRIS-CL Database
This Cultural Landscape Inventory (CLI) park report documents the Rock Harbor Lodge Historic District cultural landscape, part of Isle Royale National Park in Michigan. The historic district centers on Snug Harbor, a small cove that provides shelter from Rock Harbor. The Rock Harbor Lodge Historic District has and continues to serve as the main access point for tourism on the island. It contains the location of the visitor center, the docking point for all concession boats, the meeting place for ranger led tours, and a concession operation for reserved accommodations and dining. There are two periods of significance for this landscape. The first begins with the establishment of the resort in 1902 and extends to 1943 when the longtime manager of the resort, Bertha Farmer, released her concessions to a partner of the National Park Service. The second period of significance spans 1956 to 1972 in which Mission 66 and the Parkscape USA programs development added, updated and improved structures in the Isle Royale National Park. The two periods, when viewed together, represent the evolution of tourism and recreation on Isle Royale as a process that resulted in the current condition of a layered landscape at Rock Harbor. This layering is typical to the development across Isle Royale and is consistent with the historical use and reuse of materials on the island over time.
