In 2022 the National Park Service (NPS) contracted Commonwealth to conduct an HRS of Mammoth Cave National Park. Funding for the project was provided by the NPS Cultural Resources, Partnerships, and Science Cultural Resources Fund Source. This HRS, the second conducted for the cultural resources in the Park, accounts for changes to the Park’s built environment since the original HRS, incorporates additional research, and reanalyzes and reevaluates resources documented in the first HRS. Of the 290 surveyed cultural resources, 57 have been previously listed in the NRHP either as individual listings or as contributing resources to larger historic districts, and 13 have been previously determined eligible for listing in the NRHP or contributing to historic districts. An additional 17 resources have been determined not eligible for the NRHP or as non-contributing resources to historic districts, with SHPO concurrence. Of the remaining 203 cultural resources, this HRS recommends that 55 are eligible for listing in the NRHP. Fifty-one resources are recommended not eligible or non-contributing because they have lost historic integrity or are under 50 years of age and do not rise to the level of significance required for properties under 50 years old. Eighty-two resources, particularly the roads and cemeteries, are recommended for further research because an evaluation of eligibility can be confidently and accurately made. Last, this HSR identified 15 previously identified resources, which were listed in CRIS or recorded in previous surveys, as no longer extant. This HSR should serve as a long-standing document to help Park staff with management obligations through Section 110 of the NHPA, along with any Section 106 undertakings that will need to be conducted for future projects. The eligibility recommendations provided in this HSR may be used by Park staff to plan future documentation efforts, such as official DOEs, NRHP nominations, or CLIs or CLRs.
