This document is the National Historic Landmark (NHL) nomination for the George Read II House in New Castle, New Castle County, Delaware. The NHL nomination for the George Read II House documents its national significance under NHL Criterion 4. The Read House is an outstanding early example of Federal style architecture, reflecting the influence of the Philadelphia merchant class and a property exceptionally valuable for understanding the evolution of American architecture during the early years of the republic. The Read House is also significant as a design inspired by the long-demolished but seminal 1787 Bingham House of Philadelphia, perhaps the most influential neoclassical Federal style mansion in America. The period of national significance is 1797-1804.
