The Janis-Ziegler House is located at 244 St. Mary's Road, Ste. Genevieve, Missouri and is a contributing resource to Ste. Genevieve National Historical Park, Ste. Genevieve National Historic District, and Ste. Genevieve National Historic Landmark District. The goal of the Janis-Ziegler House HSR project is to document its history and condition and present a treatment plan to guide future rehabilitation as a visitor attraction. The house was built circa 1790 and is a one-story vertical log building over a stone masonry basement. Also known locally as the “Green Tree Tavern”, the house is situated on the west side of St Mary's Road, just southwest of Gabouri Creek, overlooking the north end of the Common Field to the east. Alterations during the 19th century included enclosing a portion of the open galleries and reconfiguring the hipped roof into a double-pitched gable roof. Ste. Genevieve National Historical Park was established as a unit of the National Park Service (NPS) on October 30, 2020, to “preserve, protect, and interpret for the benefit of present and future generations, the themes of French settlement, vernacular architecture, and community form and farming on the frontier associated with Ste. Genevieve.” The French Colonial settlement was originally founded circa 1750 on the west bank of the Mississippi River approximately 60 miles south of modern St. Louis, Missouri. After a major flood in 1785, the village was gradually relocated to its present site on higher ground.
