The Jean Baptiste Valle House is located at 99 South Main Street, Ste. Genevieve, Missouri and is a contributing resource to the Ste. Genevieve National Historic District and the Ste. Genevieve National Historic Landmark District. Constructed by Jean Baptiste Valle, a prominent political figure during the 1803 Louisiana Purchase, the house was built circa 1794 as a one-story vertical log building over a stone masonry basement. Located on the corner of a city block, the house is surrounded by a maintained landscape on the north and east sides. Alterations during the 19th century, included enclosing a portion of the open galleries, modifying chimney and fireplace locations, reconfiguring the hipped roof into a double-pitched gable roof, adding a second floor half-story, and building additions on the north and east sides. The goal of the Jean Baptiste Valle HSR project is to document its history and condition and present a treatment plan to guide future rehabilitation as a visitor attraction. Ste. Genevieve National Historical Park was established as a unit of the National Park Service (NPS) on October 30, 2020, to “preserve, protect, and interpret for the benefit of present and future generations, the themes of French settlement, vernacular architecture, and community form and farming on the frontier associated with Ste. Genevieve.” The French Colonial settlement was originally founded circa 1750 on the west bank of the Mississippi River approximately 60 miles south of modern St. Louis, Missouri. After a major flood in 1785, the village was gradually relocated to its present site on higher ground.
