Closure area to protect Peregrine Falcon nesting sites. This closure impacts rock climbing routes in the Maryland Heights area. For more information on the impact to climbing access see the seasonal closures section of the park's climbing page. Peregrine falcons are considered rare in Maryland and West Virginia and threatened in Virginia. The species is protected under the Migratory Bird Treaty Act. The park closes certain areas of the park for part of the year to protect nesting sites. Each year from approximately February to August, portions of Maryland Heights, including several climbing areas and rock outcroppings near the overlook, are closed to protect nesting peregrine falcons.
