This document is updated National Historic Landmark (NHL) documentation for the Indiana War Memorials Historic District National Historic Landmark in Indianapolis, Marion County, Indiana. The updated NHL nomination for the Indiana War Memorials Historic District documents its national significance under NHL Criteria 1, 3, and 4. The district was originally designated in 1994 as the Indiana World War Memorial Plaza for its association with the American Legion, as an exceptional illustration of post-World War I memorials, and as a dramatic realization of the city planning concepts of classical formality and grand monumental scale associated with the City Beautiful movement. The updated documentation expands the boundary to include the Indiana Soldiers and Sailors Monument, which is the largest, most elaborate, and most monumental memorial to Union veterans of the Civil War in the United States and was the precedent for the memorial plaza. The updated documentation also changes the name of this NHL to the Indiana War Memorials Historic District to reflect the extension of the boundary beyond memorial plaza. The period of national significance is 1887-1965.
