Invasive Plant Management in Kenai Fjords National Park: 2022 Summary Report
Visconti C and Kriedeman C. 2024. Invasive Plant Management in Kenai Fjords National Park: 2022 Summary Report. National Park Service. Seward, Alaska
This report is an overview of the Kenai Fjords National Park’s (KEFJ) Invasive Plant Management Team’s (IPMT) 2022 field season. The KEFJ IPMT has been surveying for and treating invasive plants since 2004. This year’s team was composed of one biologist, one biological science technician, an SCA intern and two Youth Conservation Corps members. The IPMT successfully survey and treated high priority invasive plant populations in the Exit Glacier Area, along the Coast and in Seward. We surveyed a total of 73.8 acres, manually treated 0.6 acres, and chemically treated 0.55 acres with herbicide. This season we spot sprayed a total of 9.26 gallon of Milestone herbicide mix at a rate of 6 ounces per acre and applied 4.26 gallons of AquaMaster herbicide mix and at a rate of 48 ounces per acre. We identified a total of 14 invasive plant species in the park and on park properties. We discovered common peppergrass (Lepidium densiflorium) in the Maintenance Facility for the first time this summer. We coordinated the Seward community weed pull for the 17th year in cooperation with Kenai Peninsula Cooperative Invasive Species Management Area (KP-CISMA) partners. We had 17 adult volunteers and hand pull 106 pounds of bird vetch (Vicia cracca) at the Seward Middle School. We participated in the Alaska Division of Agriculture invasive spongy moth (Lymantria disparasiatica) monitoring program for the 11th year. We deployed four pheromone traps at the Exit Glacier Developed Area, and no invasive moths were detected.
