This document is the National Historic Landmark (NHL) nomination for the Old San Juan Historic District/Distrito Histórico del Viejo in San Juan, San Juan County, Puerto Rico. The NHL nomination for the Old San Juan Historic District/Distrito Histórico del Viejo San Juan documents its national significance under NHL Criteria 1 and 4. San Juan was one of the premier colonial cities in the United States and the nation’s most important and complete Spanish urban center, serving as a key port from which to establish their cultural, military, and political agendas throughout Spanish America. The collection of buildings Old San Juan/Viejo San Juan represents four centuries of Spanish culture, religion, politics, and architecture. The period of national significance is 1519-1898.
