The NHL nomination for McKeen Motor Car #70 documents its national significance under NHL Criterion 1. Built in 1910, Motor Car #70 is the best surviving example of the first commercially viable application of internal combustion power in a self-propelled railroad car. The McKeen car was a vital precursor to the transition in rail transportation from steam power to petroleum-based locomotion and presaged the rise of the streamlined, all-steel passenger car of the 1930s. The period of national significance is 1910-1946.
