Mitigate runoff damage to infrastructure in Deerlodge Park (STAR #21336)

Caskey S. 2024. Mitigate runoff damage to infrastructure in Deerlodge Park (STAR #21336). National Park Service

Gully erosion is impairing the gravel access road that leads to the Deerlodge Park campground, boat ramp and ranger cabin, causing flow to be directed towards the vault toilet, flooding the structure. NPS hydrologist Simeon Caskey visited the site to perform a reconnaissance survey on April 20, 2023. This memorandum summarizes his observations during the site visit, results of a subsequent GIS desktop analysis to characterize the surface runoff flow paths in the vicinity of the gravel road, and specific recommendations for mitigating runoff impacts on the gravel road and vault toilet. A more detailed civil engineering design in consultation with a hydrologist and natural resource specialist are appropriate next steps to address road surface water drainage issues and mitigate sedimentation and flooding in the vault toilet. WRD will provide continued support and consultation upon request.
