Yampa River Boat Launch Erosion; Flooding of Park Facilities from a Tributary Channel

Two natural resource issues threatening DINO infrastructure in Deerlodge Park are discussed in a reconnaissance-level evaluation. This document identifies the hydrologic and geomorphic processes contributing to these issues and provides a framework for possible mitigation approaches. The first issue involves the Yampa River boat launch, where the boat ramp has experienced substantial erosion due to channel migration. Natural river processes have left the structure in semi-disrepair and continually threatened into the future. The second issue involves periodic flooding and damage to infrastructure from a nearby ephemeral drainage that is a tributary to the Yampa. There are three approaches to mitigate the boat ramp erosion. Greater study will be required to thoroughly address the tributary flooding issue, possibly including a floodplain analysis. Upon request, the WRD will provide continued support and consultation to develop effective and sustainable mitigation approaches to address these issues.
