Great Smoky Mountains National Park Vegetation Mapping Project; NPS Vegetation Mapping Inventory Program

National Park Service - Great Smoky Mountains National Park. 2025. Great Smoky Mountains National Park Vegetation Mapping Project; NPS Vegetation Mapping Inventory Program. National Park Service

This layer displays the mapped Overstory Vegetation classes created as part of the NPS Vegetation Mapping Inventory (VMI) project for Great Smoky Mountains National Park, published in 2021. This is the most recent, and authoritative version, of overstory vegetation for the park. This overstory vegetation map was created for VMI via contract by the USGS vegetation mapping program at the Upper Midwest Environmental Sciences Center (UMESC), Natureserve, and staff of Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Forty-six vegetation map classes were developed by UMESC based on 2015 NIR stereoscopic aerial imagery and extensive field work, and over 30,000 mapped polygons representing these 46 classes were individually mapped by their team. Map classes cross-walk to NVCS vegetation associations.
