Great Smoky Mountains National Park Understory Vegetation

National Park Service - Great Smoky Mountains National Park. 2025. Great Smoky Mountains National Park Understory Vegetation. National Park Service

This layer represents understory vegetation classes for Great Smoky Mountains National Park, as created as part of the 2004 vegetation mapping process with the Vegetation Mapping lab at University of Georgia. One hundred-ninety-six unique understory vegetation classes were created, and over 25,000 polygons mapped based on color infrared stereoscopic photography taken in 1998. Mapping occurred at a 1:40,000 scale. Currently, the layer is symbolized by a “Label” field, that combines vegetation classes into 16 groups for clarity of use. The original vegetation classes are available in the “DOMINANTVE” field.
