Overview map for a Story Map In December 1933, Arthur R. Kelley and his assistant James Ford were assigned to oversee archeological excavations at Ocmulgee, in Macon, Georgia. From then until October 1941, large crews of men were employed by the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) and other New Deal programs to work on excavations and developing the park. In addition to miles of trenches in the area that is now the national monument, the archeologists also excavation numerous related sites throughout Georgia.
