The purpose of this study is to review the proposed alignment for the Rockaway Gateway Greenway, study its various segments, make recommendations as to which segments should be considered for phase one construction funding, and develop, together with a Class C cost estimate, conceptual designs for the proposed phase one alignment. The Rockaway Gateway Greenway is a planned twenty mile bicycle/rollerblade/wheelchair/pedestrian system which forms a loop around Jamaica Bay and will connect several important recreational sites with the Gateway National Recreation Area, including Floyd Bennett Field, Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge, Jacob Riis Park, Fort Tilden and Breezy Point. The greenway will also make these recreation facilities and destinations more accessible to the surrounding neighborhoods in Brooklyn, Queens and the Rockaway Peninsula. The Rockaway Gateway Greenway is a key component of the New York City Greenway System, which includes the Shore Parkway trail soon to be constructed.
