This administrative history of concessions management does two things. First, it provides an analytical narrative of how NPS formulated and carried out a policy of working with the private sector to accommodate visitors in Glacier National Park from 1910 to the modern day. And second, it chronicles the development of the physical infrastructure of visitor accommodations in Glacier. It has two technical audiences in view: the professionals who work in national park concessions management, and the professionals who take care of Glacier’s historic structures. Chapters 1 through 4 of this report deal with the federal government’s relations with Great Northern from the early days through 1960. Chapter 5 covers NPS relations with Hummel’s Glacier Park, Inc., 1961-1981, and Chapter 6 treats Greyhound’s Glacier Park, Inc., 1981-2014. Chapter 7 focuses on the backcountry chalets. This report discusses the park’s other concessions – boat concessions, horse concessions, and other tour guide services – only peripherally.
