The NHL nomination for Neutra Studio and Residences documents its national significance under NHL Criterion 2 for association with architect Richard Joseph Neutra, a seminal figure of the twentieth-century Modern movement in architecture and a founder of mid-century “California Modern” architecture. From 1932 to 1970, Neutra lived and did the vast majority of his work at this property, also known as the VDL Research House. The Neutra VDL compound is the best place to understand Neutra’s design philosophies for creating humane, healthy, indoor-outdoor, multi-household environments for everyday people on a small urban space.
