Summary of bank stabilization evaluation for a reach of the Animas River, conducted, June 9, 2016

This river assessment was conducted to evaluate an area of bank erosion on the Animas River within AZRU, providing recommendations to park staff regarding geomorphic processes, overall bank stability, and the appropriateness of bank treatments. The river bank in question is characterized by a high, alluvial terrace that contains extensive, in-situ cultural material that will likely be impacted through continued river processes, and, therefore; consideration of some form of stabilization is appropriate. Previous attempts at bank protection using waste concrete along part of the bank may have been effective, but lack riparian and habitat values. A comprehensive approach to treatment is necessary and will probably include removal of the waste concrete, reshaping the terrace to a reduced slope, stabilizing the toe of the slope with native stone, and planting the terrace face with native, riparian vegetation.
