Summary of site visit (February 5-6, 2013) where WRD staff provided on-site advice regarding current and future flood hazard.

Purpose The purpose of this site visit was to provide on-site advice to monument staff regarding the replacement of infrastructure and ground mounted equipment, as well as the maintenance of point protection (a temporary floodwall) located within the Regulatory Floodplain. Specifically, monument staff was interested in advice regarding nine pedestrian bridges (two of which will support small motorized vehicles), one motor vehicle bridge, a sewage lift station, an electrical transformer, and a two air conditioning compressors. Also, the temporary floodwall that was installed in 2011, may have degraded somewhat and no longer provides the same degree of flood protection. Consequently, a decision needs to be made whether to maintain, upgrade, or remove the structure. Additionally, a portion of the Visitors Center (VC) is subject to overbank flows and monument staff requested review of possible mitigation measures for this part of the structure following eventual removal of the floodwall. Lastly, in addition to the on-site advice, monument staff also requested a review of applicable NPS floodplain policy and guidance in completing a Floodplain Statement of Findings for the developed area.
