The South Florida/Caribbean Network (SFCN) conducts long-term coral reef monitoring as part of the nationwide Inventory and Monitoring Division of the National Park Service. The benthic marine communities of the SFCN are part of a complex and diverse ecological system that includes algae, corals, and other marine invertebrates. Reef-building corals are the primary architectural organisms and are sensitive to environmental degradation; therefore, they are good indicators of overall health for a park’s reef ecosystem. The objectives for this monitoring project include to determine whether percent cover of stony coral as well as other major taxonomic groups (e.g., algae [turf, calcareous, macroalgae], gorgonians, sponge, and substrate), coral species diversity, coral community structure, and rugosity are changing through time within selected coral reef sites, to determine how the above mentioned response variables vary in space within park reefs and how these variables, which describe coral reef health and composition, are changing through time in parks with different management zones (e.g., DRTO), and to provide a visual comparison of change through time and allow future analyses of benthic components not identified in this protocol by archiving and maintaining the video and photographic record of transects. Monitoring is conducted via permanent 10-meter (32.8 ft) transects, filmed underwater by a diver with a digital camera. In the lab, the videos are broken into sequential still image “frames” and 10 dots (per image) are randomly placed upon each image and identified to major category [coral (by species), algae (macroalgae, turf, or crustose coralline), gorgonians (sea fans, etc.), sponges, and substrate]. This project is a repository for all datasets, protocols, reports, and other types of publications pertaining to coral reef monitoring at Biscayne National Park, Buck Island Reef National Monument, Dry Tortugas National Park, Salt River Bay Historical Park and Ecological Preserve, and Virgin Islands National Park.
