The purpose of this site visit was to assess channel and floodplain conditions of Rito De La Frijoles (Frijoles Creek) after a series of floods that have occurred along the drainage over the last three years, including the largest recorded flood that took place on September 13, 2013. The ultimate goal of this field exercise was to provide advice regarding future actions aimed at recovery from the recent flooding and preparation for possible future events. This report briefly summarizes our conclusions, and is focused on the reach in the vicinity of the headquarters area, continuing upstream about six miles to the “upper crossing.” Specifically, we address three main issues associated with the recent floods: 1) the degree of vegetation recovery in the watershed since the 2011 fire, 2) potential consequences and possible treatments of the large amount of woody debris, and 3) possible bank erosion in the vicinity of the headquarters area.
