This document is the National Historic Landmark (NHL) nomination for the New York State Barge Canal, located in eighteen counties in New York. The NHL nomination for the New York State Barge Canal documents its national significance under NHL Criteria 4 and 5. This massive early-twentieth century enlargement of New York’s canal system embodied the Progressive Era emphasis on public works and was built to counter the growing monopoly of railroad corporations over the American economy. Built and operated entirely by the state from 1905-18, New York’s canal system represented an alternative to federal canal and river improvements elsewhere in the country. Engineering innovations on the canal included concrete lock chambers with steel gates, the electric power systems, and the movable dams that combined elements of European designs in a novel configuration. The period of national significance is 1905-1963.
