Continual urbanization along the southern California coastline and the presence of other environmental stressors have resulted in widespread degradation of the region’s ecological integrity. Tracking landscape-scale characteristics provides indicators that can inform managers on the status and trends of landscape change affecting national parks. Parks: SAMO (entire protocol); CHIS and CABR (partial protocol) Protocol Objectives: At SAMO and CABR, determine the status and long-term trends in land-use and land-cover changes in and surrounding the parks; this objective is not applicable to CHIS because the park is remote and not experiencing major land-cover changes. At SAMO and CHIS determine phenological variability (start, end, and duration of growing season and maximum productivity); this objective cannot be implemented at CABR due to the resolution of the data. At all three parks determine broad trends in vegetation community change and amount and extent of light pollution.
