This document is the National Historic Landmark (NHL) nomination for the James Merrill House in Stonington, New London County, Connecticut. The NHL nomination for the James Merrill House documents its national significance under NHL Criterion 2 for its association with Merrill, one of the most significant American writers of the second half of the twentieth century. He published thirteen collections of poems and won every major award for poetry in the United States. During a period when most of America was breaking from the strict formalist poetry of previous centuries, Merrill held fast to this style, while addressing topics of modern life and producing well-crafted examinations of homosexuality, art, and spiritualism. The period of national significance is 1954-1995.
