Biological surveys on the USS Arizona and USS Utah, lying submerged on either side of Ford Island in Pearl Harbor, were conducted for the National Park Service in 2010-11. Using 117 reference points originally established on the deck and the hull of the Arizona during a previous survey in 1986 and 72 new reference points set on the deck and starboard side of the Utah during the present surveys, sediment quality and thickness, biofouling thickness, benthic taxa composition and cover, and fish species composition size and abundance were estimated by researchers for both vessels. Where data were available from the 1986 survey, comparisons were made with results of the previous study.
