In the Spring of 2007, USDA Forest Service personnel and USDI Park Service personnel established a tree of heaven (Ailanthus a/tissima) control project at Friendship Hill National Historic Site and a Morrow's honeysuckle (Lonicera morrowii) control project at Fort Necessity National Battlefield. The purpose of these projects was to significantly reduce the amount and negative impacts of these two invasive species and prevent their spread into uninfested areas. At Friendship Hill National Historic Site, 21,177 tree of heaven were treated (9193 were treated mechanically and 11,984 were treated with herbicides) in 73 areas. At Fort Necessity National Battlefield, 3528 Morrow's honeysuckle were treated (50 were treated mechanically and 3478 were treated with herbicides) on approximately 5.5 acres. Both of these projects will continue in 2008.
