This Cultural Landscape Inventory report documents the history, significance, and features of the Schulhof Lustron House, a historic vernacular landscape in Indiana Dunes National Park, Indiana. The house was constructed in 1950 and used historically as a vacation home as part of the Beverly Shores resort community. It was originally sited on the north, beachfront side of Lake Front Drive. In 1956 the owners moved the house to its current location south of the road to protect against flooding and erosion, while retaining dramatic views of Lake Michigan. The Schulhof Lustron House, including the cultural landscape, is significant a local level under Criterion A for its association with patterns of historical development in entertainment and recreation, and Criterion C for its embodiment of distinctive architectural design characteristics. The former family vacation home is part of Beverly Shores, a 20th century resort development. The site was selected and landscaped to take advantage of views of Lake Michigan and the surrounding dunes, an excellent example of an unusual adaptation of the prefabricated steel house. The period of significance is 1950-1976, beginning when the house was first built and ending when the Schulhofs sold their property to the National Park Service (NPS). The Schulhof Lustron House meets Criteria Consideration B as a moved property, as the 1956 relocation occurred during the period of significance and did not impair character-defining features that convey the historical significance.
