The is a broad area within the Tularosa Basin below the ranges of the surrounding mountain, extending from south of the park boundary, out to the north and east past the far edges of the dune field. This area has no specific purpose other than to ensure coverage of the dune field and additional surrounding desert sufficient to roughly balance dune field and non-dune field, providing both a visual and analytical basis to start from, while limiting the influence of the quickly ascending mountain ranges near by.
